Sleeve Gastrectomy
A Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy also referred to as a “Sleeve” or “Sleeve Gastrectomy” is a bariatric weight loss surgery. Typically the procedure is done laparoscopically with minimally invasive technology. During the procedure the surgeon removes about 80% of the existing stomach, leaving a long, narrow diameter, tubular stomach – like a “shirt sleeve.”
This procedure creates a powerful tool for weight loss by first, creating a smaller stomach, initially naturally restricting the amount of food a patient can intake. Secondly, the portion of the stomach that is removed alters the hormonal and neurological messaging systems which control appetite messaging in the brain.
With all weight loss procedures, compliance with a specific menu, exercise and emotional and psychological support plan specifically designed for this surgery is critical to long term success, health and well-being.
